Discovery Loop

Founded.
Overview
A Public Benefit Corporation founded 2026-08-05 by four departing Google researchers, with the stated mission of automating machine learning, science and engineering to accelerate discoveries (source).
The name states the thesis: a loop in which ML systems improve the process that produces ML systems. At launch the company intends to tackle automation of machine-learning research and engineering first, before branching into hardware design, drug discovery and clean energy (source).
It has no model, no product and no published research as of this page's creation. What it has is the founding team, and that is why it has a page: four of the people who built the infrastructure the field runs on left the same company on the same day to do this.
Key People
- Jeff Dean — co-founder. Left Google after 27 years; was Google's Chief Scientist (source)
- Sanjay Ghemawat — co-founder; Google senior fellow (source)
- Oriol Vinyals — co-founder; VP of research and deep learning lead at Google DeepMind (source)
- Quoc Le — co-founder; Google DeepMind fellow and founding member of Google Brain (source)
Models & Products
None announced. Dean's stated immediate priority is to "find office space, and hire an amazing founding team over the next few weeks" (Jeff Dean on X) (source).
Recent Activity
- 2026-08-05: Founded. Announced by Jeff Dean on X (post) alongside Google's own leadership announcement. Structure: Public Benefit Corporation. Google is a founding investor and cloud partner; the seed round is co-led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures. Round size and valuation were not disclosed in any source read (source)
Strategic Position
Three things distinguish it from the ordinary frontier-lab spinout.
It is not trying to build a frontier model. The target is the research process — automating ML research and engineering — which puts it closer to AlphaEvolve-style automated discovery and to Co-Scientist (Google DeepMind) than to a Gemini competitor. That is also the area its founders have the deepest claim to: Dean and Ghemawat built the systems layer the field's training runs sit on, and Vinyals and Le built much of what runs on it.
Google funds and hosts it. A founding investor and cloud partner is not an arm's-length departure; it is closer to an externalised research bet that Alphabet keeps exposure to. What that means contractually — equity, compute commitment, model access — is not established in any source read (source).
The Public Benefit Corporation form is a deliberate choice and puts it in the same structural family as Anthropic and OpenAI's restructuring — though no source read states what public benefit is written into its charter.
