Significance

The departure is not a single hire. Four people left together — Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le — and Google announced a leadership restructuring of Google DeepMind on the same day (source). Alphabet stock fell roughly 5%.

This wiki has recorded Google talent departures individually before — Noam Shazeer to OpenAI and John Jumper to Anthropic within 48 hours in June 2026. Those were competitors hiring Google's people. This is different in two ways: the four left together, to a company Google itself is funding and hosting, and they left to work on automating research rather than on a rival frontier model.
